Stopped a Property Tax Hike Before It Happened
When a proposed property tax increase came before the City Council, Michelle Tanner was the first and only one to initially vote against it. The initial vote stood at 4–1 in favor of raising taxes, but Michelle held the line and made the case for fiscal responsibility. By the final vote, the council reversed course and rejected the increase 4–1. Without Michelle's early opposition, that tax hike very likely would have passed.
Family-Friendly Values
Protecting Minors from Harmful Material
Michelle Tanner partnered with Utah Representative Colin Jack to help pass statewide legislation aimed at shielding minors from sexually explicit and harmful content. This collaborative effort reflects her ongoing commitment to protecting children, upholding community standards, and preserving St. George’s family-friendly values.
Prioritizing Public Safety
Delivered Major Public Safety Pay Increases Without Raising Taxes
At a time when others insisted tax hikes were the only path forward, Michelle Tanner helped secure significant wage increases for our police officers and first responders, without increasing taxes. By prioritizing public safety within the existing budget, she showed that it's possible to support those who protect us while respecting taxpayers.
Fiscal Responsibility
Reformed the City Budget to Reflect the Will of the People
Michelle Tanner led the charge to transform how the city approaches its budget, shifting decision-making power back to the taxpayers from unelected bureaucrats. Since Michelle joined the council, they’ve gone from double-digit budget increases to a -1% decrease this year. This reflects a more disciplined, transparent process that prioritizes community needs over government growth.
Supporting Small Business
Cut Red Tape for Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs
Michelle Tanner works to make St. George a more business-friendly city by reducing unnecessary regulations and modernizing outdated ordinances. This included supporting policy changes that helped mobile businesses operate more freely, as well as loosening restrictions on signage and advertising, thereby giving local entrepreneurs more flexibility to grow and succeed. These efforts have made it easier for small businesses to thrive without having to jump through unnecessary hoops.
